MASH Army Medical Department Watch Cap.
MASH Watch Cap.
Much inspiration of late has come from the original MASH movie of 1970, starring Donald Sutherland, Elliot Gould and Sally Kellerman. In conjunction with this I also lucked on a vintage Korean War maroon Army Doctors ball cap with the Caduceus embroidered in white on it.
Thinking then about the upcoming winter I sat back and wanted to marry the mix of influences together into a new watch cap idea for the season. Choosing a Peruvian worsted wool in a great color match maroon, I designated my original Dreadnought pattern from 1910 to use as the base for the cap. The distinctive ‘pinch top’ crown of the Dreadnought was perfect to suggest a parallel to the construction of the white doctor’s surgical caps worn in the OR by Mash Units throughout the conflict.
I’ve put together a small collection of these knits, 9 in all and hope they will grace the heads of fellow MASH enthusiasts as they thwart the icy grip of winter.
