There was a stench of oil mixed with the smell of diesel exhaust and of cooking food, of the storage of food, and of the very men themselves. Unshowered for weeks at a time the odors of the men permeated the boat. The physical toll on their clothing was brutal, and their white work caps were soiled, and grubby and frayed and grey.
