Product authenticity isn’t simply about originality—it’s about capturing the true spirit of something. The Papa Nui Combat Beach trunks embody that idea perfectly.
The UDT short itself is far from new. It has been commercialised, reinterpreted, and reproduced countless times. Yet it remains a powerful statement piece, steeped in military heritage and carrying the aura of elite service.
My connection to this garment predates Papa Nui and, in many ways, helped shape the brand’s origin story. As someone who has spent over five decades surfing, alongside a lifelong fascination with military history, it was only natural that these two passions would eventually converge.
This is where authenticity truly matters. It’s when a product exists because it belongs—because it has meaning—rather than simply following trends or satisfying the demands of fashion.
Back in the early 2000s, wearing UDT shorts was my personal rejection of a surf industry that, to me, had lost its way. More than that, it became a way to bridge past and present—honouring the Second World War, paying tribute to those who served, and making a personal statement every time I entered the water.
It also connected me to my father, who wore similar shorts at Lae Beach in 1943, and stood as a salute to the wartime watermen whose courage continues to inspire me.
With that legacy in mind, I’m proud to introduce the new Combat Beach Trunks for summer.
Developed from several original pieces in my own collection, these shorts combine the best elements of each. Most importantly, they stay true to the original proportions. There’s no modern taper here, no tac bro' fits—just the generous rise and fuller leg that define their unmistakable 1940s silhouette.
Original-style locking ladder buckles replace the more cumbersome D-ring hardware often found on reproductions, while a buttoned rear pocket keeps essentials secure.
Available in Olive Drab HBT, as well as USMC Jungle Side and Beach Side Frogskin camouflage, the Combat Beach trunks are built for both surf and sand—whether you’re taking on your local break or making your own landing.
Fit is designed to be roomy so a medium would encompass a 32”-34” with the waist belt secured accordingly. There is no size small 30”.
