THE BEAR CAT CAP

As part of Operation “Orient Shield,” the United States Navy maintains a formidable carrier force patrolling the Sea of Okhotsk, north of the island of Hokkaido.

Operating as a strategic deterrent to the Soviet-controlled Kuril Islands, US Navy F8F Bearcats fly combat air patrol above the fleet, vigilant against the threat of sudden communist aggression.

As a symbol of squadron camaraderie, every Bearcat pilot wears an A-26 leather flying cap, meticulously crafted from the distinctive hides of Hokkaido’s native Ussuri brown bear.

Pebbled, gnarled and wonderfully irregular, these remarkable hides are tanned and worked in Japan for the Papa Nui Cap Co. in collaboration with John Lofgren Bootmaker.

The hides are sourced only from bears that have died from natural causes. In recognition of the animal’s profound cultural significance, the heads and paws are returned to the indigenous Ainu people for traditional ceremonies associated with Kimun Kamuy — the god of the mountain and bear.

The remaining hides pass to local tanneries before reaching John Lofgren Bootmaker, where the larger panels are selected for an exclusive line of rugged footwear.

And the offcuts?

Too small for boots, but far too precious to waste.

These irregular pieces provide the raw material for an extraordinary collaboration — the Papa Nui A-26 flying cap, recut in genuine Hokkaido bear hide. Every available section is considered, every natural variation embraced, and each finished cap carries the unmistakable character of the animal from which it came.

Rare material. Japanese craftsmanship. Zero waste.
