Description

Arriving press from the USA dug into their new lodgings in downtown Saigon and reported on the war from the comfort of teak verandah chairs and ice cold drinks. Very few had the moxie to go seek out the VC in his jungle hideouts, preferring to glean 'skewed' news from local sources like , Pham Xuan An, who representing Time and Rueters was eventually post war, outed as being a Communist double agent.

Some from of the crew from Newsweek went down the road to visit Nguyen and Mamasan. The mom and pop set up down on Dong Khoi street, copied the very storied visors bought by the Newsweek staff and made them over into something a little more befitting the surroundings, equal parts in the field and mixed memento. The visors quickly became popular and were often seen in forward operations worn by Advisors and such.

*With a long sartorial history that stretches back to the earliest tennis starts like 1920’s talent Helen Wills, and then author Ernest Hemingway’s days in Michigan and Idaho in the late 1950's, my particular fascination with visors harkens back to the early revival during surf comps in the mid 70’s and 80's when promotional visors were au-riguer. Judges in their tower chairs and contestants on the sand were equally sheltered by these wonderfully practical sunshades. No closed spaces for the heat to build up in the crown and yet still maintaining maximum sun protection. Everyone wore one back in the day and now Papa Nui explores his coastal heritage whilst referencing that golden age of beach life. Think Smirnoff Pro 1974 and the Pro Junior 1978 and the Stubbies Classic 1985 surf contests.
